According to the 2005 operators guide, it states to "Use the XP-S 10W-40 4-stroke oil (P/N 219 700 346) or an equivalent approved by BRP" So my question is what is a approved equivalent 10w-40 motor oil that can be purchased at a lower cost?

BRP oil is of course the recommended oil, but...Any mineral based (non synthetic) 10w-40 will work fine. I prefer Castrol, since that is what BRP oils are formulated from.
DO NOT RUN ANY SYNTHETIC OIL IN A SC MACHINE.. Unless you have the 08' metal washer update done. The ceramic washers were prone to slippage when synthetic oils were used.Dan Solie -

Yes, amsoil has always stated that their oils will not make the ceramic clutches slip. That being said, if you use it and it does slip or break, any chance at warranty is out the door.Dan Solie -
