  • 2000 Kawasaki 1100 STX DI Piston Failure

It was running fine, and I was told it suddenly stopped, and did not want to restart. After a few attempts it restarted, but would only go about 20 mph.

Removed the plugs and found one beat up, so did a compression check and found the front hole had zero compression, and the other two had about 130.

Took top end apart and found two holes/pistons perfect, but the one cylinder had the piston beat to hell along with the head. The cylinder had a few marks toward the bottom of the sleeve. Got a good used head off ebay, and getting the hole oversized with a new piston.

Thoughts on what caused, and what I should check before running again?

Crank Case air leak, bad injector, oil line not connected. Check these items.

Thanks for the info. You are the first to suggest an air leak. Would a air leak cause just one piston failure? Any quick tips to check the injector?

Yes it could, if the front crank seal failed it could take out just the 1 cylinder. If the injector is bleeding down it could wash oil off the cylinder walls, remove it and shake it, see if gas drips out of it, if so it maybe faulty.

Another piece of info, I have had an fuel pump code 39 on this ski for a fuel pump issue. Could this have caused the problem? I will check pressure soon.

Low fuel pressure can cause a lean condition.

I tested the fuel pressure and found it had about 50 lbs pressure. Spec is 28 lbs. My other ski was within spec.

I have experienced the same failure on my 01 Stx di. It was due to an oil line that fell off. I personally would replace ALL the pistons with new ones, but understand if you are on a budget.
