  • 98 xp limited starter and bendix keep sheering teeth

i have a 98 xp limited that was given to me. i put a new top end, cylinders and pistons. along with a good crank assembly. the stator and flywheel magnet came off a 787 engine wich appeeared to be the same. when tryin to start it seems to almost backfire. watching the driveshaft turn backwards when it tries to fire. the thing started a few times and seemed to run ok for not having tuned it. ive gone thru 3 starters and a bendix. i dont want to put another starter in until i figure this out. please help

They use different flywheels. I would imagine there are different teeth and different reference points for the timing.
