  • 1996 717 pto flywheel end seal leak

We have a 1996 seadoo gti with a 717. The motor and ski run great. Cranks easily, pulls hard, no bog at all.
however it seems that a small bit of oil and gas is leaking from behind the pto flywheel (the end seal I think) and splattering around the hull. Not a lot just a little. . How dangerous is this small leak? If it's dangerous is it possible to change without rebuilding the motor? We have a splined tool to unthread the pto wheel. So can we change the end seal without splitting the case? Any info is appreciated. Follow our build on Instagram @1996seadoogtalive

The rear seal can let air into the engine also and cause a lean condition which will burn the piston.
Replacing the seal requires disassembly of the bottom end of the engine.

So this is the only cause for a leak here? Case must be split and all four seals replaced to fix the problem?

That is the only problem that I can think of unless the case was damaged in some way.

Could we ride it gingerly until it develops a bog or should we pull the motor and go ahead with the seals? If we do just the outer seals, can we just turn the motor over, split the case and only replace the outer seals without having to pull the crank or anything else apart?

If oil is coming out then the engine isn't getting enough lube, so the decision to continue using it a decision you need to make.
You could just split the cases and replace the seals, but if you go that far into it you might want to consider a rebuild.
