  • Wiseco piston clearance

    Bryan,

I saw in aftermarket performance that you told someone about piston
clearance. You suggested that the clearance be increased at least .003
more than a OEM. Did I misunderstand ? The Wiseco specs call for
.005-.006 on a set that I have. If you add .003 to that..........it starts
getting kinda wide. I had a set in previously that were set up for .010.
That set scuffed on the exhaust side only.......but very slightly. Enough
aluminum came off to hang the ring. That wear showed the exact scuff
size of the exhaust port. That indicated to me that the piston was
putting the most load only on that small amount of skirt instead of
distributing the load across the entire piston skirt area. I would
appreciate your input on this subject. I have another set ready to go
in and I would like to make sure that the same thing doesn't
    happen again. Thanks

That's right I said above OEM specs, not Wiseco. OEM normally calls for 0.003" - 0.005", and I would run Wiseco 0.006" - 0.008"

Thanks for the response. Do you have any idea why Wiseco would
suggest .005 - .006 if they have a problem sticking at that
clearance ? I ALWAYS warm up both of my Sea-Doo's before I hit
the throttle hard. Do you think that their clearances are adequate
knowing that I warm up to running temperature before running
      them hard ?

I'm sure it works fine in some applications, but from the vast majority of feedback on the net, I can't advise going with their specs.

he's right! i've had em lock up at factory specs!

i set my 657 sea doo @ .0065 and my 720 @ .007 and have had no problems at all. if it's a rec. ski, i would go with cast. a set of hyperneuratic cast or somthing like that, are suppose to be good. i think someone told me that sea doo stock pistons are hyperneuratic. or you could get the tops of them coated. :D

Wiseco pistons are forged pistons. They are very lightweight. They are not the best choice for rec boats. They need to be setup loose at .006 or more, depending upon bore size. The larger the bore the more clearance they need. They rattle loudly when cold and they don't last nearly as long as a cast piston would without excessive wear.
Why would you consider them ? Price? It will cost you more in the long run, and they are not cheaper than aftermarket replacement cast pistons.

I can think of no good reasons to use them in a recreational motor.
