  • 1998 Yamaha XL760 quit and won’t start

My XL760just died while riding on the river the other day. I cannot get it to start. Spark is good, and I replaced the plugs. It backfires through the back carburetor now that I changed the plugs. It has an SBT premium motor that was put in last spring with only about 30 hours on it. The compression in the front cylinder is low, the gauge reads about 60 lbs. the back cylinder reads 120 lbs. any ideas what could have caused this out of the blue? I guess I will have to pull the engine and take advantage of the warranty.

With a big discrepancy between the two compression readings I would expect a lean issue in one cylinder causing the piston to "melt" and lose compression.
