It depends on the exact model, but generally the scan tool will let you read/clear fault codes, make new keys, and perform diagnostic functions like triggering/disabling individual coils and fuel injectors. For a lot of the complicated newer skis a scan tool is a must-have tool because diagnosis is basically impossible without it.
