  • More problems, grrr!

Ok, I don't understand. I posted the other day that my GTX was running great which is was after a carb rejet that I got from WCM and a drive line replacement. Anyhow, I took it out today and it ran like crap. Has great acceleration but the top end all it did was spitter and sputter. The other day it would stay at a steady 6960 rpm WOT. Today it was all over the place, one minute it would jump to 6500 rpm the next it wouldn't go over 5500 rpm. It was very spuratic. I tried adjusting the highs in and out a tad, then I even tried adjusting the low speed. It didn't change anything, I had them initially set to 3/4 turn on low speed and 1/4 on the back carb as per Bill's instructions. I did pull the plugs, the back cylender plug was very clean like it was running lean, the front was a perfect color. The only thing I did to the ski was put higher octane fuel and use a can of Sea Foam to try and get rid of any water that may have been in the tank. I also did a compression check and got 110psi on both cylinders (seems low). The only other problem I had was when I would hit a hard wave the engine would just die, I had to pull the key off and put it back on and it would start right up. What could this be, it's starting to drive me nutts.

Well, after doing some reading on compression, 110psi on a 787 is terribly low. I will get a better guage and recheck, but I might be seeing SBT for a new motor sooner than planned. Could my problem be that my compression is so low it isn't properly burning the 93 octane fuel? Could this be causing my problems?

If your reading is accurate, it's toast, sorry.

But I think if this started after you dumped crap into your tank, there's your problem. Additives do NOT get rid of deposits and water - only properly cleaning the tank, lines and carbs does.

Thanks, I am working on getting a good quality tester to verify the compression. I will also be draining the tank and cleaning it out. Could it still have something to do with the higher octane fuel?

What do you mean by stiff? And are you talking about the off/on/res selector? Since my last post, I have already drained, removed, and cleaned the fuel tank. Cleaned the filters, and replaced all the fuel lines (planned task already). Had lots of dirt and floaties in the bottome of the tank. Hopefully all this will solve my problems. Also I still have to figure out why it dies when I hit a hard wave. Loose wire or connection somewhere.

the fuel valve should turn like hot knife though butter . if its hard to turn replace it . if you have a lot of stuff floating in your tank you might want to check your filter in your carbs , how was your fuel sensor ? they come apart somtimes and make a mess in the tank .

if you got 110 on each cyl , the motor is prob ok . i would say the guage is low . now if you had 150 and 110 then you would have a problem . when checking the fuel system , check the fuel valve , if its stiff its bad and can couse the motor to run like crap .

The ski is back together now, getting ready to put gas back in it and take her for a spin. The fuel selector isn't stiff at all, it turns pretty smothly. I took the screen of the end of the sensor and cleaned it pretty good. It wasn't too bad. Wednesday, I have to pull the carbs back out to remove the choke plates, I will be checking the internal filters at that time. The fuel tank is now spotless inside, the entire fuel system has been cleaned except the carbs which was done only 2 weeks ago. Hopefully this will fix my problem. Now as far as the electrical problem goes, I didn't find any loose wires anywhere, the battery terminals are good and tight. I tightend all the zipties up that hold all cables and wiring to the hull, they were all loose. Maybe it's my D.E.S.S. key, it's getting pretty old, that will be the next thing I replace. I need a spare anyway. Time to cross my fingers, and hope the problem was the fuel adidtive.

Well, back from the river and she ran pretty good. Still have the cutting out problem though, not sure what that could be because it did while at 1/4 throttle and no waves. don't know.

I am willing to bet that after having all that sludge in your fuel tank that your little filters in the carbs are clogged. I would not run that ski till I took the carbs off and verified that the filters are clean. This could cause a lean seizure and cost you more money. Taking the carbs off and checking does not take long and gives you a piece of mind. Plus if you do it yourself, its free compared to a new motor.

The carbs are coming off Wednesday when I get my primer kit in, I hadn't planned of ridding anyway. Also I still have to figure out why it keeps dieing.
