Just had a buddy stop by with his 89 SP.
Says it doesn't run in the water.
It runs fine pluged into a hose ...
    Compression AOK
    He changed the ignition module.
He only gets RPM's out of one spark plug wire after snapping a handy Snap On RPM device to it.

I am thinking he needs a new stator?
Thanks for All the Help !<br />Blaine

It sounds like it's only firing on one cylinder under load - I would look to the ignition coil first and make sure the spark plug boots are good - snip back the wires.

OK , It seems to be firing OK now, compression is still good ...

But when in the water you have to just about keep her at full throttle to keep it running ...

      Rotary Valve ?

Check the valve timing and clearance.

You are wasting your time checking the rotary valve and the clearance. If it was that bad, it wouldn't start and run.

The problem is either ignition or carbureation.

A retarded motor will do that, as well as a too rich motor.

I'd be looking at the carbs first, after I checked for exhaust fumes and gasoline fumes in the hull. Try riding it with the seat off to see if the problems clears up. A cracked gas tank, or leaky exhaust coupler will cause this type of problem.

Last but not least is the coil. Both plugs are susposed to fire at the same time, so if one fires, the ignition itself is ok, but there could be a problem with the coil or coil wire on one clyinder.
