  • 1999 gti backfiring

i am working on a friends 1999 gti that he just put in a rebuilt 717 engine from sbt. it starts fine and idles ok but when you get past 1/2 throttle it back fires and boggs down.i put in a carb kit and still the same problem.the #1 plug looks great but the #2 plug is wet.he said the valve is set at 147 but i dont know if it was correct. what kind of problems would he get if the valve was off? any suggestions? thanks

An off-timed valve wouldn't only give problems after 1/2 throttle - I would be more inclined to think a mis-fire or rectifier problem.

First try sniping the plug wires back. Does it do this in AND out of the water?

i sniped the plug wires and no change and yes it does this in and out of the water. the only reason i guestion the valve is he said he had it set at 147 and #1 cylinder was at top but i wasnt there to verify this.

Your rectifier may be going out.
