You need to get other gaskets from a dealer, or maybe one of the shops on here has the other gaskets in stock.

No .55 is way too tight for pump gas. You need to set it to 0.065" - 0.070 and use 93+ for reliability.

Call Cometic Gaskets ( a division of Wiseco Pistons) and have them make you a thicker base gasket, or get an oem head on there. You cannot just "surface .020 off a head and expect it to be OK. Did they take .020 off the squish bands too?

What is stock (OEM) squish, that would be my target. The domes have not been touched.

Is it still possible get get .020 taken off the squish ban and be ok?

I don't want to get into custom gaskets, or buy a new head, since I just spend $$ on this one.

Thanks for your advise - Tom

Thanks - can I still use the head gasket after checking squish?

And - if I get the squish bands machined (.020 off), could that get me back to OEM specs?

Does anyone know who makes the metal spacer plates for 951 cylinders? Are they sold in a kit, or do you have to specify what sizes you want?

I would say reuse it no more than once, and yes it will get you back where you were.

If I can find a shop to remove .020 from the squish band, will that get me back to OEM.

Or in other words, does .020 off the surface = .020 off the squish band?

Thanks for your help on all these questions - Tom

You can reuse the head gasket if you spray it with copper coat.
Removing material from the squish band area will bring the MSV ( mean squish velocity) back into line with oem specs. OEM squish clearances are usually around .080. Measure what you have now, then machine off whatever is necessary to get you to between .070-.080 squish clearance.

Bill, is this something I could do myself, say with a dremel, proper attachments, and some patients? Or is that just stupid?

                        Tom,

I doubt you could bro without making the surface uneven with a dremel!

I would have it done with the right gear!

You nailed it. VERY STUPID idea.

About the most important thing with building a two stroke engine is the squish band angle and clearances.
For this reason, I suggest that you either buy a head modified by someone who fully understands how two stroke heads should work, or buy an untouched OEM head.

More engines have been ruined by improper heads than just about any other reason other than rust.

Listen to yourself. You are trying to buy special base gaskets, probably need a new head gasket or risk a water leaking head gasket, aren't sure of the proper clearances, or angles, and you are considering using a Dremel to modify a head ?

My suggestion to go find a used oem head and put it on your motor will probably save you $100's of dollars, and you will have a pump gas friendly watercraft to ride instead of work on this summer.

OK...so its a stupid idea, but had to ask. It least I'm asking these questions BEFORE re-assembly.

And I do all OEM new gaskets, never had interest in special gaskets and I just spent $80 having the head re-surfaced, so I'm not going to buy a new head, unless I can't find a reputable shop to machine the squish band.

Thanks for your help - Tom
