  • 98 VS 99 XPL drive line?

I have both a 98 and 99 xpl and plan on adding a coffman pipe, head, and proks to one for rec ridding (no cc).

Is it worth it to switch ignition systems so the mods go on the 99?

    Thanks for any help

    XPLLAKETAPPS,
I think you are asking if you should put the 98 ignition on the 99, then install the mods to the 99 ?
If so, you would be doing that for what reason? To avoid the $475 rev limiter/ignition controller?
You would still need the 98 type aftermarket rev limiter, and it sells for about $240. The difference is $235. That is alot of work to save $235, plus the twin coil dual channel 99 is a better ignition.

Yes Bill that's what I'm trying. I already own the revlimiter, I just bought the 99 xpl.

Just looking at it and reading all of the posts on retros between 98 and newer xps seems to me that the better drive line the 99 has is not worth all the work it would take.

      Thanks for the help

        Tapps,
I wouldn't do it if it were mine.

          Tapps,
I've upgraded many 1998 XPL drivlines to the later '99-'02 drivelines. That way, both of your boats have the stronger drivelines in them.
To do it requires a rear sliding coupler (the one under the shock tower), center driveshaft, front coupler and new pto, plus the two plastic coupler dampners.

Also, somewhere down the line, you may want to pickup a later model pump. The 1998 155mm pumps had brass vanes, but weak plastic housings that crack externally. The later pumps, both brass and plastic vanes, have stronger housings to do not crack.

            Excellent, thanks for the info.

I have been looking for a pump, but I didn't know that 98 had the "bad" pump, just knew I probably needed a spare. I had to modify the 98 pump just to keep the hull to pump seal working. (Used a router on the pump made the 99 gasket fit).

What year pump is it that is all plastic and pulls different size impellers because of it?? I think I read that the "new" (at least 9 months ago) had an all plastic pump and was slower or needed less pitched impellers??

            Thanks

I don't know about the less pitch impellor part of that question, but the all plastic pumps came out in the 2000 models.
They seem to work ok for me.

Group K was the source of less pitch needed for the plastic pump, I finally remembered.

This is great news. I have destroyed both pumps on my `98 XPL skis around 150 hrs. The housing just split apart. Borrowing ones off the`99's currently. I was concerned the newer all plastic were not going to hold up very well over time and abuse. Thanks
