hey nov785, i didnt know there was another JD grate out there. oh great, another grate to throw into the mix! ill just ignore the Ultrac reference since you cant find em. I thinkin ill end up with the polaris/r&d rate for now. hell, ive yet to hear a BAD thing about it, and its 30 bucks......i can use the money i save towards something else like the OP ride plate and sponsons, or maybe some flame arrestors. oh boy, now i got lots of more questions but really, are sponsons and arrestors worth it? what about pump wedges and reeds? oh, and the adjust a thrust looks **** cool!

I forgot jd made the less agressive grate. I found a Solas dual wing for 20, and liked it so much that i sold my big wing r&d to a guy with a late model SLX1200. I let him try both the small and the large for a couple weeks, he chose the large. He is just getting into races, and for him, the big wing hooked up better. you cant make speed when you aint got traction. sponsons will help depending on the water conditions you ride in.
Ever been at WOT and felt the boat pull to right or left over chop? thats the sponson catching water and slowing you down. most afer market sponsons profiles slice through the water better, reducing this darting. I'd go for the ccs airbox top instead of the vortex, but i would take the time to match the airbox opening to the carb top, put in primers, etc. Then again, the vortex filters will match the opening, and you dont have to get out the grinder.
you already have a 4 deg pump wedge, a 6 might get you a little more top end, but it may turn the slx into a porpoising sack of crap, that you have to keep trimmed way down. see if you can borrow one first to try it. getting late, talk about reeds tomorrow.
zzzzzzzzzz

On the filter to carb matching thing---anyone heard of these...http://www.lako.com/sl1050.html
Lots of good info reguarding the "Stea;lth Stacks" as well as the OEM arrestor vs. no arrestor.
