  • Synthetic oil or conventional ?

I just purchased a 2002 Polaris Virage TX and I am wondering if I should use synthetic oil or conventional oil in my new machine. Is syntheic oil worth the extra cost or does it do nothing more than conventional oil ? I am trading in my 1998 Polaris SLTH with a seized crank. ( see my earlier posting 'seized crank bearings ??' ) I always used synthetic oil in my SLTH but apparently it did not help my bearings any :( So cost aside, will my new machine benefit from synthetic oil ? Or will it just make my wallet lighter??

It might not have saved your last set of bearings, but it definitely make a big overall wear differnce, besides letting the engine run cooler and smoke a lot less.

Has anyone had much experience with the Pennzoil TC-W3 synthetic? It is very attractively priced here.

It's excellent oil1 Many people here use it, inclusing myself! I get it for $20 a gallon at Wal-Mart.

I didnt see you earlier post, so I dont know why your engine siezed. But, many main bearing failures can be traced back to water ingestion and improper cleanout, or improper winterization. (RUST, AND RUST) I always recommend non synthetic for break-in. This lets the ring seat properly. After that. most synthetics run great. Just remember, you just paid big bux for the boat. A couple bux saved on cheap oil will never pay for the price of a rebuild due to an actual oil related seizure. By oil, i mean the actual oil itself, not a broken oil pump, drive gear, misadjusted cable, bad/kinked vant hose to oil tank, and on and on problem. For chrisake, get out the jaws of life, pry open your wallet and buy some OIL.

Sorry for the harsh language, but the last thing that is ever on my mind is how good is my oil. I have never run cheap oil in my boat, coz for the price that is one less thing to worry about>!<
I worry more about the new little trinket that i just bolted on to see if i could get a little more!!

Like I said before I have always used synthetic oil in my Polaris SLTH, as for water injestion I really don't know how water might have gotten in the engine (if that is the case here ) I have never flipped it over. I have no problem with buying the more expensive synthetic if it will benefit the engine, I still have a case of it in my garage. When their mechanic tears down the motor I'm going to have him call and tell me what exactly the problem is and what he thinks caused it and I will post it here. Thanks for your replies.

Re: Synthetic oil or conventional ?

First, I agree with Wet Wolf....buy GOOD oil, don't worry about price...unless you go through 10 gallons a year! If you really look at it, the average rider doesn't go through all that much oil in a year.

As for the bearing siezure thing...it more than likely was due to rust, but it may have been caused by a little know problem with the assembly of the older engines. On your new watercraft, look at the connection of the manifold to the cylinders...do you see a gasket there or is it like a red sealant?...it should be just the red sealant. Polaris discovered back in 99' that the gaskets they had placed between the manifold and cylinders, was causing the cylinders to slightly oval when tightening the bolts. This would cause uneven ware of the cylinders causing the pistons to bind up and put undue stress on the crank/bearings. They had many engines blow because of this and it's why they do not use gaskets in that location anymore.
Top End - A great place to be!

Re: Synthetic oil or conventional ?

Even If You Use Alot Of Oil It Is Still A Good Idea To Purchase Quality Oil. I Go Through A Gallon A Week. Between Myself And My Families Skis We Burn Alot Of Fuel And Oil. It Does Not Bother Me A Bit To Purchase Good Oil For The Extra Protection Of My Motors. If You Buy In Bulk It Is Less Expensive.
