What's the best way to switch from regular oil to synthetic?

I'm getting ready to make the switch from regular oil to synthetic in my skis and I'm wondering what the best ways is. Can the two be mixed or does the conventional need to be completely gone before you throw in the synthetic? I've heard it both ways and I have no clue. I would appreciate the help.

The safest thing to do is completely empy the oil system, but you can with good relative safety, just wait until your tank is VERY low, and just fill it with the new stuff.

Bryan, I am interested in using the Pennzoil synthetic oil this coming season. I have a Polaris SLT750 that I have been premixing gas at a ratio of 40-1. Should I continue with the same ratio using this synthetic? Also, just got a '94 Seadoo SPX that I am going to continue using the injector pump. Just drain the old oil and add synthetic? Thanks
