• Dead Hurricane!!!!

i have a 96 polaris hurricane and i just had the motor rebuilt and crank replaced.i only put about a tank and 3/4 of gas through it.it was running fine.then i parked it and sat it for ten minutes it wouldn't start(so up the canal i walked).it's got spark,it's getting gas,it's not out of time.
the mechanic is haveing a hard time figureing it out.the pistons and walls look great.when you go to start it it turns over.it is real weird.the mechanic said that there might be something that's slowing the motor a little too much for it to start.it is a real mystery.has anyone heard of this problem?what could be going on here?i'd apretiate any advise..oh yeah!! good battery too

OK, first some basic thing to check and try...

Make sure the battery is good. Make sure it got at least 12.5V and is fully charged. If in doubt, jump off a car battery - as long as the car is NOT running.

Make sure the plugs are in good condition - the tops have not screwed off or anything. i have had plugs go bad and be bad out of the box, so a fresh set wouldn't hurt.

Make sure you are getting spark - take the plugs out, put them inthe plug wire caps and tough the tips together while cranking and look for a strong blue spark.

See if it's a compression problem - do a compression check and lets see where you are at.

Try a teaspoon of gas right into the plug holes - then put the plugs back in and try to start. If you have spark and compression, it should at least burp over for a second or two. If it does, then you have a fuel delivery problem.

Let us know what happens...

new pugs.it's getting spark.it's getting gas.
brand new battery.the guy i got working on it
is a good mechanic.i guess he works or used to work for sbt.(at least he where an sbt skirt)
i live in spring hill.he has covered all that.
he had the battery hooked to one of those jump boxes so it was getting plenty of juice.if you put gas in the cylinder it rattle once and doesn't even attempt to start.he thoutht it was the armature(?,not really sure if that's even the right part)not letting the motor crank fast enough
to let it start.but he checked it and that wasn't it.it's nothing basic it's a wierd problem.he says it's just something stupid and he can't find it.i guess he's had the whole thing apart looking for it.any other ideas?.thx for answering so fast.

The only thing preventing an engine from craking fast enough is the starter, or just plain lackof juice (due to a bad battery or bad electrical connections).

If you mean he was wearing a blue T-shirt with our logo, there are thousands of our customers with those out there There are no current or past tech employees that would be working on your ski without me knowing about it.

I really suspect this will be a carb problem...

There are 4 Spring Hills listed in FL - if you are inthe one in Hernando County, just swing on by with your ski and I'll get it running for ya.

Um, I'm not sure what freeway you'll take, but if you are coming down 75, turn onto SR60 towards Clearwater, then come in that way. Click on Contact SBT and there are maps and driving directions. Anytime before lunch would be best.

well i just talked to the guy that working on my
hurricane.he says that the rings melted.he told
me it would be 100 and some odd bucks for parts
and 2 hours labor.it seems fishy to me.the mechanic just bored the cylinders and rebuilt
everything a tank and 3/4 before it blew.i asked them if they had the parts to fix it and they said they would have to order it.so i told them
to pack it up and i was going to take it to clearwater to see what you had to say.then they changed tune fast.now since i was going to take it somewhere else instead of me haveing to pay for the "rework" they are going to do it free of charge.wierd huh?i don't know what to think.
but i guess i won't be bringing it to you yet.
but if anything happens to it you'll be the one getting it.i'm sick of being molested well
thx alot for you help.i'm sure i'll be seeing you

All I can say is - you are getting your crank pulled HARD. I strongly ssuggest you RUN, don't walk, away from that guy!

BTW - rings don't melt.

If you need a good dealer recommendation for your area just call in and we'll be glad to give you one!

Beach house HX rail wedges. to install them properly, they get screwed on , and glued with special stuff. i forget the particular name of the stiff, but it's in the instructions. The glue takes a couple days to dry. If you dont let it dry COMPLETELY, you will be redoing it. Theres some pics of my cane at this link.
