  • 1996 Kawasaki 750 ZXI free-revs on launch

    A friend of mine has a 750 zxi that runs perfect, the only problem is when you first take off from a stop. If you take off at full throttle, it will rev freely like it is out of the water no matter what the trim is set to. After you go about 15 feet, it shoots like a rocket and is fine until you stop, or go very slow. It only does this under hard acceleration. The prop looks fine. Any Ideas?

    Hi;
    There could be damage to the stator or a portion of the impeller that you can't see without removing it. It's also possible that the rubber "pump to hull" seal needs to be replaced. Use a flashlight or droplight and take a close look at the junction where the pump meets the hull. Depending upon the intake grate style, you might need to pull the grate to fully inspect the area. If it looks like the seal may have failed, you can use a bead of marine grade 100% Silicone sealant as a temporary repair.

        Checked the pump and didn't find anything unusual. Anyone have any other ideas?
