  • Piston Manufacturer?

Hey fellas, thanks for the quick response last time. One more question: Do you all use a brand name piston in your engines and if so, who make them? If not, then where do you get them?

    Thanks,

    Dave

We use SBT pistons, and they are made at the same factories as OEM.

Piston manufacturers around the world tend to have business in both the OEM and aftermarket. The higher quality manufacturers tend to have a higher percentage of OEM business. When interviewing piston manufacturers, they will "brag" about which OEM accounts they serve. The OEM engine manufacturers will use a variety of sources. For example, the Chinese scooter division of Yamaha will not necessarily use the same supplier of pistons as their outboard engine division. Our piston supplier is proudest of their contracts with motor divisions of Honda and Yamaha.

The technology for piston manufacturing is basically the same worldwide with the main differences being the amount of CNC automation. The aluminum alloy specifications follow AISI and JIS standards. Our supplier actually has a totally automated CNC line that has raw castings fed into one end and finished pistons coming out the other end. The pistons move between CNC operations on little "cars" on tracks.

There is not nearly enough market to warranty the maufacturing and additional inventory costs. OEM pistons are the best choice for stock size applications.

If you run 787 SBT sea-doo pistons with OEM wrist pins, you must grind the OEM wrist pin down. They are slightly too long and will not let the circlip seat properly. It is hard to tell, but be careful if you run this setup.
