what are the differences

i have come across a 96 sl900 from a local dealer, the customer said no way to the final bill and just left the ski with them, maybe 2 years ago. it has a brand new engine in it and has less than 2 hours on it, one of those hrs being on the pipe. it looks to me like an sbt but my acomplis says its a factory polaris. now, im the off site mechanic for this dealership and they want me to sell the engine on ebay, i need to know if i can determine the origin of the engine by some means so i can give an accurate description. by the way, it runs great and they want me to put a reserve of $700 on it. can i get some help? thanks.

All our engines have a 5 digit stamped serial number on the front side of the head.

i just had time to pull the engine out this evening, it all looks good, the front cylinder ( oil pump end) has a "stamped" # on it, 33815, all the other numbers are raised. can you tell me anything from this number? i tried to call the tech line but, im an hour ahead of you, and sbt closes at 12 on friday, i know that now:emoticonw thanks again.
