  • MSD ignition - 800 rotax

    I currently have set up.......

    99spx 800
    fly F/as
    worx intake great
    R&D 85/88 nozzles
    17/22 swirl

I have got (new, but not yet fitted) FP specII
    Miller head 39cc (WCM)

Next I'm thinking about getting MSD ignition.
I seem to remember Bill O saying that the 800s responed well to a good spark and timing curve , which brings me to my ?s....

    What do I need?
Does it do away with the complete MPEM?
Whats the difference between total loss and a enhancer?
Can the MSD package be set (not on the boat)up buy somone with expereance who knows a good timing curve then put it in the boat and be ready to go?
How much does the kits cost?

I'm still learning about this stuff so anyone with info or experience with MSD on there boats please add.
My mate has MSD on his SS spx he has just bought and the spark at the plug looks like an arc welder compared to my HX , SPX and his GSXL and 96XP800.
His SPXss also has the early HX style lanyard (none code no beep beep) does this mean it is total loss?

    Thanks,

An Enhancer will plug into your existing system, replacing your CDI in the electrical box. It can be completely programmed by you with the flick of some dip switches before you install it. You can change the timing curves, retards and rev limits anytime you please. You retain the Dess lanyard and the MPEM and charging system.

A total loss system is completely different, although the timing curves, retards and rev limits can be the same with either type ignition. You lose the charging system, the MPEM, DESS and the CDI with the T.L. system. You gain some spark, have a lighter flywheel, and aftermarket coils. It is designed for the Superstock racer. Not real rec friendly, as you must charge the battery frequiently to make it run.

        Thanks Bill,
This coming short course season(NZ summer)will be my 2nd , This season I have to race in SS, we dont have a limited class over here for the 800, (although novice 800 runabout is up to limited.)

So I'm not to worried about it being total loss, because it is going on my race ski.

How much $ for the totall loss setup?
        Shall I e-mail you direct?

I do not have my pricing lists here at my home. But the TL system, including the aluminum flywheel is near $900.00 or something close to that. You can call me M-F at 626 914 9509 and I can figure the discounted racer net pricing for you, and give you an exact quote.

What controls the water solenoid for the factory pipe?
I have the micro touch setup wired in to my MPEM already (did it a couple of mouths back) for the pipe to be fitted, will the TL MSD set up have a feature to control the solenoid.?

Micro touch makes a simple controller that uses a power wire, a ground, and has a wire to wrap around the sparkplug wire for the rpm signal to the controller. It sells for around $100.00

The unit you are describing is the MT ignition controller with ECWI, which you will not use with TL.
