  • PSI triple pipe exhaust for polaris

I just bought a 93 polaris sl 750 and it came with a set of PSI triple pipes, the guy never installed them. I was wondering if they are worth putting on and if they are good or not. thanks

Re: PSI triple pipe exhaust for polaris

I threw out my PSI catalog years ago after I sold my '94 SL750 but as I
recall the triple pipes required porting, and carb changes for any significant
    gain.

I would advise against installing them.

Bill Is Right. Psi Pipes Are Not Worth The Trouble. They Due Require Port Work And Yes The Carbs Will Need Upgrading. Tuning Is A Nightmare With These!!!! I Would Recommend Highly Against It Unless You Like Tuning More Than Riding. Sell Them And Make Some Money.

Which one would be better for the SL, the single PSI pipe or the tripple PSI pipe? Does porting needed for the single pipe?

Re: PSI triple pipe exhaust for polaris

The PSI single pipe is actually your stocker :) They work awesome on the 94 and newer SL750 and 95 and newer SLX780 and SL780. You really have no options for your model. I wouldn't have given up on the triple pipes. With newer parts now available, I think they could be made to work just fine. I too have a brand new set for my 96 SLX780 but right now it's set up with the 92-93 SL650/750 stock pipe. 7000rpm 60 to 61mph and great bottom end. I can go into detail but it won't work on your 93. If anyone wants my ideas on how and why I think the PSI triples can work let me know and I'll post it?

Re: PSI triple pipe exhaust for polaris

Does PSI still make these pipes? I went to look at their web site but never found anything for watercrafts...

My 92 craft was updated with a 94 pipe and manifold and cooling system...so the psi single pipe should make a little diffrence right?

Where could I find carb tunning info for this pipe?

Re: PSI triple pipe exhaust for polaris

PSI no longer makes any PWC parts. You had a dry pipe in there originally and it also had a shorter cone section. In 94, Polaris went with a different pipe (wet and a little longer). It had a totally different powerband and was a great bottom end pipe. Your stock pipe or one off of a 92-93 SL650 revs higher. Your limiting factor is your pump. The 92-93 pumps were inferior to the 94 and newer pumps. When you mate the 92-93 pipe with the newer models, you do have to use a Pro785 cdi because you will be on the rev limiter. The 92-93 had a higher rev limiter but the curve was terrible. Since the introduction of the Pro785, it's heigher revving cdi and more favorable timing curve worked really well with the older pipe. You do have to prop down also. I run a 12/17 swirl with an 87mm nozzle (stock is 84mm, yours is 82mm old pump).
Back to the PSI single pipe and also the Hot Seat pipe. It is really a rebadged 92-93 Polaris stock pipe.
As far as the triples go, this same scenario whould work. The problem with the pipes was that no cdi was available when they were produced. You had to use the CDI from a 93 SL750 because it had a higher rev limiter. I can't remember exactly but I tink it's 7000 vs 6700 of the 94 and up 750/780. The problem was the curve was really bad but that's all that was available. This is where the tuning became an issue and people didn't have much success. Once again, with the Pro785 and its cdi interchangeability with the 750/780 offering a performance timing curve and an 8000+ rev limit, it really uncapped the potential of the old pipe and I am guessing the triple pipes. I have yet to try them out but I am confident that it will work once I do.

Re: PSI triple pipe exhaust for polaris

Thanks for the info... so all in all this PSI pipe will give me the bottom end I was looking for....

Oh and I do have a 94 or 95 pump on it with the trim... Old owner couldn't remember exactly... it was the same watercraft the pipe and cooling system came from.

Should I just revert to the old carb spec of the 92-93?

And should I up grade my cdi also? What would be the price of these CDI's?

                    Thanks for help

Re: PSI triple pipe exhaust for polaris

Yes use the 92-93 pipe. Since you do have a 93 model, you should have the higher rev limiter. Yeah a Pro785 cdi would be ideal but you need to wire it correctly. Try to contact Randy at http://www.watcon.com . He has many used Polaris parts and especially Pro785 parts. Since I have not done the above on a 750, it will require some impeller and jetting changes. What impeller do you have now? I would recommend a 12/17. Jetting can only be hands on. I have 44mm carbs so my set up is totally different. Are you sure you have the 84mm newer pump? I have never heard of a 94 and up pump adapted to the 92-93 hulls.

Re: PSI triple pipe exhaust for polaris

As for the pump... the seller told me it was a 94... I will need to look it up... And the impeller is the stock one as far as I know... Never needed to take it apart yet... my watercraft is a 92 and not 93... if it makes any difference...

                        Thanks

Re: PSI triple pipe exhaust for polaris

I had you confused with the first post in this thread. I just noticed you had a 92 SL650. I have never tinkered with a 650. I would still be surprised if you really had a 94 and newer pump in it. I think the whole intake tract would have had to been altered to fit the newer pump to the hull. As far as the cdi, the 650 was totally different so I don't even know if a Pro785 cdi would work. Sorry I confused you with the first poster with the 750. I can't really recommend anything for you. At least not from personal experience.

Thats ok... it still a starting point..... I know the 750 and 650 are pretty much the same motor... but for the electronics I am not sure...

The pump was "upgraded" including the shaft and all the parts from the hull to the back inclusing the power trim... My friend has a repair manual... maybe there are pictures of the diffrent pumps in there....

If you have the trim then you have a 94 and up pump in there. I guess I finally heard of one :) Make sure you have a stainless steel impeller and not the aluminum. Some 94 and newer pumps from a 650 had an aluminum impeller. Just swapping that out wakes up the ski. I still say 12/17 swirl either from Skat Trak or from Polaris 700cc model. They had the Skat made 12/17 swirl stock.
