  • I think I bought a major problem (95 sl750)

Well, I just got a used one. I'm havibg a problem with high speed. Ihave ordered a manual but I was wondering if I bit off more than I can chew. It's hard to start and idle but it will not kick in high speed. Max out throttle and It will wooble and gurgle and maintain 4 mph the drowns itself out.

do a compression check , its prob blown , if not then it sounds like the carbs are in bad shape .

Is that the three clyindered 750 motor?

The three clyinder engines are very easy to get the crankshaft out of index ( twist the crankshaft) when they get flooded with water and hydrolocked.
You should make sure that the crankshaft is not twisted. remove all three sparkplugs. Bring the center piston to exactly tdc. It must be exactly at TDC, use a dial indicator to bring it to TDC. Both outer pistons should measure exactly the same depth in the bores. If they do, bring the two outer pistons to TDC, and the center piston should read the exact same depth as the two outer pistons did with the center piston at TDC. If any one piston is off by more than a couple of thousandths of an inch, replace the crankshaft with a trued crankshaft.

If the crank is not twisted, look for a carb problem, like a stuck open needle and seat. Check all three carbs.

I had a oem service rep tell me that when performing the above indexing trick, 2mm difference is acceptable.

        HAHA!

.080" on a dial indicator is a big tweak as far as timing goes!
