  • WaveRaider 700 - swap in 1100??

I just got a yamaha WaveRaider 700 (purple hull, red trim) that was in very bad/neglected condition. i am familiar with two stroke engines from motocross, so i got it running again, but i honestly have no idea how to tune these engines at all, less for performance gains.

I would REALLY like to be able to swap in one of the bigger 3 cylinder engines made by yamaha - and apparently the 1100 is the most fesible swap. i understand that most of the parts need to be transfered... but i would really like to know the particulars of cost, need for custom parts, and locations to maybe find an old/wrecked 1100 yami for parts. i am new to the sport, as this is the first time ive owned my own PWC... but ive been riding for a number of years now with friends. i know a 700 is the small kid on the block... and id like to go a little faster than 45mph... so if anyone could help me out... that would be great. instant message me at drasticfastreact on AIM if you have any ideas/input on a project of this nature that you would like to include past the posts here on SBT.

P.S. i have a blinking oil light on, and the 2 stroke oil is full. any ideas on how i could fix this/ what the problem might be? also... what are some important things to check so i can make sure this old neglected motor doesnt break or lock up on me? anything in particular i should watch out/ listen for? anything that would help a tired ski get more life would be great. i want to atleast keep her alive and healthy until i can swap in a bigger, badder 3 cyl... the the 700 is gonna be up for a rebuild. Thanks again for the help.

My 15 years of experence modifying watercraft tells me you would be much better off if you got the 700 running in stock form, sold it, and bought a 1100 or 1200 model. You will spend much less in the long run.

Purple Hull is the light weight fiberglass one. Should run 52-53 stock. Check here for some mods.

Have a 1100 pump complete, like new no rust $450 and I might have the streering cable If I have it will thru it for free. The 1100 cable is longer.
Does your hull have the forward adapter mount holes for a 1100 engine?

His purple hull doesnt have the other mounts, they must be glassed in.. , glass shop can do it....just depends on what you really want to do with the ski,Bill may be right.... you may want to sell it and get an 1100, but the weight wont be the same, but a LOT less time consuming, and expense......but then again,,,when I leave work I stop off and look at my buddies project....talk about HOT ROD..
1994 purple hull ,custom molded inlet scoop, with ram air hose directing it to the flame arrestors , relocated mounts, uses all 6 mounts ,with an aircraft alluminum brace bar , hull and hood professionally opened up and reglassed (it looks stock)to accept ...TRIPLE PIPES..,it runs a RIVA race ported 1200, with MSD (and the holeshot box) 48mm NOVI'S, V-force reeds, riva billet head ,crankcase porting, T&W crank, special intermidiate shaft(a lot stronger),billet couplers, and his choice of different props to try..this is truly ,jet ski hotrodding...the work is incredible....not thrown together, the rideplate that most would just install on there ski, he takes it to his machine shop and mills it till its perfectly flat, he just takes his time ,having fun building something, that is how I like to do it.sure ... you can go out and BUY just about anything, at this date and time, ready made, but not something you build.. I guess ,I just miss my 350 vega wagon........

            Bullraider,
I love hot rods, water or land, but in this case, the raider hull is not very stable even when they were new and stock. With hull, grate and sponson mods, they can be much better than new, but I still wouldn't consider any Raider hull "stable and safe" at the speeds that your friends ski will achieve with those mods he has made. In fact, I think he will find it downright scary to ride when he finishes his project.

Hulls have evolved as each new hull is designed for more speed and stability. The later model hulls, although much heavier, are alot more conductive to the higher speeds from 1200+ cc's and triple pipes, ect.

I have ridden many skis capable of speeds well past their designed speed capabilities. Belive me, it isn't much fun if you do not feel comfortable much past 60mph, but 70 and 80 mph will really get your attention, and actually reduce the fun factor.

Build it fast, but build it safe to ride.

I'm with Bill on this one. I had 1100 Raider and it was a handful in stock form at WOT. Especially on the turns!! Just make sure whatever you are riding that you can handle or otherwise you're going for a swim!

Yes Bill the newer hulls are MUCH better, but then again , what is the person building it for?...the curves or straight or both, NO the ski will not turn good at 70 plus, WHICH SKI WILL?...I rode FERCHO's GPR.. on the Riva site , when I was done the gps read 80.6, I didnt feel safe either, that is the draw for me....chalk it up to twin mini-mac's on my kart, when I was younger,I didnt have a clutch that could stay with the rpm of the chainsaw engines so they were direct drive..STARTING AND STOPPING was a little different, anyway, if a man wants to build a Raider , help him Bill...we look to you for the help, with Beach house,or Riva sponsons IT WILL turn hard, but given any speed on any ski , g-forces will pull anybody off..regardless of the hull..Susan I know you are a fellow Texan, we are in Houston,I have read a ton of your posts on sites all over, and respect you, when all the gpr's get together at Egret bay, in Clearlake, come ride Fernando's ski sometime at 80 plus then turn it............

                  Re: WaveRaider 700 - swap in 1100??

Bullraider, I was reffering to straight line running, not even thinking about turning. The Raider's I've ridden, do that all by themselves, which is what I mean when I say "unstable" and I cannot "ride with confidence" when riding a raider hull at high speeds.

I am more than happy to help this guy, if he decides to modify his Raider, but I still think it is kind of foolish to try to put an 1100 or 1200 egine into his hull. It will cost him more than if he just went out and bought one with a larger motor.

Yes , I agree it will cost him more , I was giving an alternative, I also e-mailed him to tell him about a 760 Raider , running 62/63 if that is the way he wants to go.There is a lot of newer ideas to make the hull behave...I personally dont have problem with mine it is set up pretty good,me and 4 other ski's (70-77 mph GPR'S) went riding through the locks, that are around the bayou, they could not leave me at all, the throttle was on ---then off---then on ...after a sweeping turn we would hit it and the lowly Raider was right next to them, I guess it is a matter of how much money you have, and what you want to do with your ski,and where you ride it at, hospital stays and medication keep me from having a VERY strong ski.....maybe some day......
