  • Yamaha Throttle replacement

I have a 2000 Yamaha XL1200 and am wonderin if there is an aftermarker throttle conversion. I am thinking of converting the trigger throttle to a handgrip throttle like on a motorcycle. My thinking is that it would be easied on the hand and fingers. Is there anything like that out here?

No, they quit making them about 12 years ago. Believe it or not, they are very dangerious on a watercraft. I once thought they would be the "answer" to my sore thumbs and fingers, but I darn near killed myself after installing one. It was very difficult to let off the throttle at the worst possible times when cutting and jumping.

With todays gas prices, this actually saves you money!
On my last outing, my fingers were tired after 2hours so I decided to take the ski out and had only burned up a half tank of gas!:emoticont

yea, bill has a point, when you jump a wave and pull back on the bars, you pull back on the throttle.

            Re: Yamaha Throttle replacement

Really that should not be a problem with anybody who has any motorcycle/dirtbike experience it is the same problem the first time I jumped on my CR250. I was also looking for a twist throttle put on my ski. I have the finger throttle right now which personally is WAY better than a thumb throttle but from riding motocross and stunting rockets I am used to twisting it open. The best feeling is when she starts to get away from you and you slide back and uncontrollably blast the throttle open, makes you feel alive!! Post any info on a twist throttle for a ski, I would like to do the conversion.

You are completely wrong. How much motorcycle experence is necessary? I have 40 years of it.

                Re: Yamaha Throttle replacement

Im not sure exactly how much is necessary, probably hard to put an exact number down. Personally I think it would be easier than riding my CR, water is ALOT more forgiving, I stab the throttle on my ski and it gets up and goes ripping across the water no matter how hard I hit it. I stab the throttle on my CR250 or my pit bike or my Buell Firebolt 1200 and either Im sitting on my @$$ on the ground or Im riding 60-70mph wheelies across 2 miles of REALLY HARD pavement. A ski seems much more forgiving!! Guess it depends on what and how you ride!!

Ok, Then let me ask you something. How many hours experence do you have with a twist grip throttle on a PWC?

                    Re: Yamaha Throttle replacement

None, as I previously stated I wanted to find the conversion because I would like to try it. I was just stating that I felt like I could handle it due to my backround with bikes. I was not questioning your skill or was I degrading the validity of your point but I think that I have enough skill to control my ski with a twisty grip because of what I ride, what kind of motorcycle do you have 40 years of experience on, how did you ride it and how much experience had you had prior to shooting yourself across the lake?

                      Re: Yamaha Throttle replacement

My first "real factory built" motorcycle in 1963 was a Bultaco, followed by several other brands of dirtbikes, ATV's and Quads which I rode for several years throughout the deserts and sand dunes in California, Nevada, Arizona and Baja. I stll occasionally ride. Previous to 1963, we made our own motorized vehicles and bikes out of whatever we could weld together. All had twist throttles.

So, naturally, like you, I thought that I could put a twist throttle onto a watercraft and have an advantage at the pwc bouy tracks. I was wrong.

Why do you think they quit making them ?

                        Re: Yamaha Throttle replacement

Manufacturers don't necessarily stop making things just because they are a bad idea they stop making them because there is no market for it. The uncontrollable runaway throttle can also be controlled with different amounts of rotation in the linkage and tighter springs.

Sometimes they quit making things because they are DANGEROUS!!!!

                            Re: Yamaha Throttle replacement

I'll put in my .02 here. I've been wrenching for 30 years. I've put twist grips on bikes, atvs, sleds, pwc, and hovercraft. They work great on bikes. and OK on a hovercraft, but I still prefer a trigger throttle., On everything else when you have the white knuckles going and the hang on death grip, the twist throttle makes you go FASTER. not a good thing. As your hands are being peeled off the bars by inertia, or gforces, or a tree branch or, whatever, your fingers roll the throttle open as they are slipping of the bars.

I can remember pulling wheelies on my XL500 and stepping off the back. I would run behind it as the rear fender dragged on the ground, then the taillight, then the seat. Only once or twice as i able to get back on the thing and that was coz i was going slow enough so that i could run fast enough to leap back on the thing and close down the throttle, other than that, the farther the thing came back towards me it rolled the throttle on more...
Bottom line is, if you have a finger or thumb throttle, you can give the bars a death grip and not go WOT
