  • Mathis, TX; Lake Corpus Christi (Lake Mathis)

    1. Location: Located in Mathis, TX which is about 36 miles north of Corpus Christi, TX. To get there, take I-37 to exit 34 or 36 and follow the signs posted to get to Lake Corpus Christi State Park (LCCSP). LCCSP is well marked and has a $3 per person entry fee that keeps most knuckleheads away. This fee give you assess to the park all day long. There are 2 very good paved launchramps in a peaceful cove. Seldom is parking a problem.

    2. Ramp Details: as above. Ramps sometimes close if the lake is low due to draught conditions sometimes encountered in Texas.

    3. Water type: The water is what I like to call "tea colored." The lake bottom is a firm muddy/clay which is NOT disgusting to walk on and is easy on the ski if you beach it. Freshwater, warm, and it feels good.

    4. Typical conditions: Usually lots of chop due to south Texas's usual SE wind (notice, I did not say breeze). However, there are various nice protected coves and if you are on the leeward side of the lake it can be very pleasant and smooth. Water level fluctuates a lot as mentioned above.

    5. Popularity: Light to moderate boating traffic. Never crowded when I have been there, but I never am the only one there either.

    6. Amenities: Bathrooms have running water and showers along with being very clean. You actually see your money put to work here. Park Rangers are usually seen driving around. No alcohol allowed in the park. There is no place to buy food or beverages in the park. The roads in the park are in great shape and are paved.

This is a real nice place to ride near Corpus Christi, Texas. Come on out if you get the time! One warning--there are these "hitch hiker" birs that are very small and pointy. They are a real pain in the a$$, I mean foot. Wear shows when walking about.
