  • Moss Landing, CA /Pacific Ocean

Moss Landing is one of my all time favorite places to ride. Take Hwy 1 north from Monterey, CA 16 miles to the Moss Landing Marina/Boat Launch. Turn west and the public boat launch is right there.

Fuel is not available at the launch, but located close by – approx. 5 miles north on Hwy 1, on the left side of the freeway. All grades are available, and pricing is reasonable. This is a two lane rural portion of the Hwy, so take special care when crossing traffic.

The launch ramp has parking for approx. 100 vehicles with trailers, there’s a nice clean bathroom with changing rooms and showers, and a Kayak sales and rental shop immediately adjacent to the ramp.

Cost to launch $12.00 per ski. There are two small docks for staging and two vehicles can launch at the same time. The ramp itself is on a gradual grade, so tide variations aren’t a concern when launching or loading. There are also four freshwater flushing stations in excellent working order at he top of the ramp. Cost is .25 cents per use, but bring your own hose.

Once you launch from the protected lagoon, head left to the inlet and then right past the seawall to the open ocean. We usually go right about two miles and run both the 5' - 10' faces on the surf, or play in the open sea. It's best to launch in the a.m. as the wind can come up in the afternoon and it's not uncommon for a small craft advisory to be put into affect.

There's not a lot of seaweed or debris in the water, and conditions are what I would call very clean. A wet suit is required year round though as the temps only fluctuate by about 10 degrees year round. Never ride the ocean alone, as an unexpected breakdown could turn deadly if not properly prepared.

There are generally not any surfers in the are where we ride, but if there are, please be sure to give them the right of way - as well as any sea life (otters, sealions, sharks) you may encounter.

Camping is not permitted on the beach, but there are nearby camp ground available. We always rent a condo in Manresa Beach (about a 10 minute drive) as it's cheaper than a motel, offers a three car garage in a gated community, and is close to great restaurants and entertainment.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions or need rental info. At PriceConsulting@Yahoo.Com
