  • Nevada City, CA - Bullards Bar Reservoir

Written up in Water Ski Magazine two years ago as one of America's Top 5 Hidden Treasures, Bullard's Bar in an amazing place to ride. The flood control dam forming this reservoir was completed in 1970, and created this little jewel.

From Sacramento, CA, head east on Hwy 80 to Auburn, then take Hwy 49 north out of Auburn, through Nevada City to Marysville Rd. (county Rd. #E290) 2 miles west of Camptonville and turn left. Follow this road 2.7 miles to the "Dark of Day" picnic Area/Boat Ramp.

Be sure and stop in either Auburn or Nevada City for supplies and fuel as this is a very remote location with hardly any improvements - but the place rocks!

There's a nice boat ramp which is well maintained and offers self pay if a ranger is not present. $8.00 fee covers your launch, and there's plenty of parking.

There aren't many beaches, but the water is emerald green and crystal clear. You can go without a wetsuit after June 1st, and the conditions are excellent ranging from absolaute glass back in the fingers of the lake, to decent chop on the main channel.

This is a wakeboarder and waterskier's paradise, and they seem to share well as long as we respect their space too. Camping is on shore in both designated area and non-reserved shore camping. I like to go boat camp as it offers some nice private spots to hang after a long day on the water.

Ground fires are allowed, but you need to be sure and keep them well contained - this is a heavily forrested area, and it would be a total shame if a fire were to break out.

Like I said, this is a very remote little lake, but well worth the drive =)
