  • Hesperia, CA, Silverwood Lake

    General Location:
Hesperia, CA (Southern California). About 10 miles east off of Highway 15, Hwy 138 exit. It's elevation is about 3,400ft.

    Ramp Details:
Only 1 ramp with 6 (or 8?) spots. (Parking) reservations required during peak season (www.reserveamerica.com) or you will WAIT outside the park (weekday is usually ok). Only give out 125 reservations per day. That is good because it prevents the lake from getting too crowded.

Cost to reserve is $3.00, you will have to pay another $3.00 to get into the gate.

There is camping available with room for car and boat trailer. Reservation required (different than day use)

    Water type:
Clear, clean water, a bit on the cold side (70 degrees in summer)

    Typical water conditions:
Smooth/small chop in morning. Gets a bit choppy in the afternoon when the wind kicks in.

    Typical popularity:
Can feel crowded at times but usually is not too bad. Do watch out for a lot of PWC not going in the right direction (counterclockwise)

    Amenities accessible by water:
No gas but there is a small shop for fishing gear and snack food. No real place to beach equipment at launch point. Instead, you have to ferry out equipment to main lake. They have shade structures, picnic benches, porta potty (no running water, no fires)

    Local laws:
This is a California State Park. They DO allow body contact with water. You can pull skis, wake boards, knee boards, inflatables (hard to find places like this in SoCal). Inflatable (legally) requires a quick disconnect so rider can disconnect from pulling watercraft. Must have flag observer who is 12 years and older.

There is 2-3 patrol boats on the lake but they are more likely to give you a warning instead of a citation unless you are doing something real stupid.

Silverwood lake is a horrible place to ride and or camp. Don't get me wrong the area is beautiful but the water is always year round cold and it is windy everyday. Camping....forget it.....standard Riverside/LA type rude people that only care about their own fun.
Maybe its me but that's not camping. You are squeezed together where your neighbors keep you up all night and the constant sound of motorhome generators fills the air. I know its not like that year round but in the Summer it's terrible.
