  • Alternative to NGK plugs

Tired of having the NGK caps rattle loose or strip off when removing plug wires. No other plug manu. uses this design! Anyone know the equivalent to the NGK BR8HS?

Champian also makes spark plugs for skis but I also recommend NGK. You can use a pair of pliers to snug down the caps.

        Re: Alternative to NGK plugs

After installing the spark plugs, use a pair of pliers, and tighten the tips of the plugs...This works for virtually all NGK Spark Plugs, when the tip is needed.

NGK also has a solid tip product available Use "BR8HS SOLID"(this is also the part number)for your RA1100, and your early model, non-power-valve GP-1200; and a "BR8ES SOLID" (again, this is also the part number)for late model, power-valve GP1200R's

        As a last resort you could try Champion's Powersports Plugs.....Use 8902 for the GP1200R's.....Use 8814 for the RA1100, and non-power-valve GP-1200's.

          Re: Alternative to NGK plugs

I've used the plier trick time and time again. That will often stop them from rattling loose, but when I remove the plug wire the cap will stay with the terminal and *zip* right off the threads. I didn't know they're available in 'SOLID' design - thanks John Kubiak!

            Re: Alternative to NGK plugs

NGK BR8ES-11 is the solid terminal sparkplug part number for the Yamaha and Sea Doo watercraft that use BR8ES sparkplugs.

I have found that most other makes of sparkplugs do not last as long before fouling. A set of sparkplugs should last a season or more.

If your motor fouls sparkplugs too often, it needs carbureator work or at least adjustments to the low speed needles.

              I think the GP1200 uses BR8HS also

                Re: Alternative to NGK plugs

Bill, BR8ES-11 is a wide gap NGK spark plug. The suffix (-11) indicates a 1.1mm or a 0.044" gap plug.... The NGK part number for the solid tip plugs, per NGK customer service, is the standard part number with the word "SOLID" added to it. My information is taken directly from the NGK catalog. Here's a link to that page..... http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/techinf...tnumberkey.pdf

                  John,
Yes, you are correct. I forgot to write SOLID behind the BR8ES-11.

                    Re: Alternative to NGK plugs

By the way, if you have the cap type and don't like the caps coming loose, a little red locktite on the top threads before you screw it down and tighten with the pliers usually will make sure it doesn't come loose again.

                        Re: Alternative to NGK plugs

NGK made a mistake. The BR8HS has a thread reach of 1/2" and the BR8ES has a thread reach of 3/4". Put those in a 97-99 GP 1200 and the pistons are going to smack them. I checked the SBT on line catalog and the Yamaha on line manual -BR8HS.

John, I don't know 1% of what you know but every time I take the seat
of my GP I see a red "BR8HS" decal ;)

I thought it would be weird that the Raider 1100 and GP1200, as similar as those two motors are, would run different plugs. I bought the Gp1200 from SBT's own Technical Support (Bryan) and I'm sure he used the proper plug - I just can't get to the ski to check it out right now.

                              Thanks fellas.
