Tehy eventually leak because the rubber stopper fails to maintain pliability and shape, and if you used it enough, it will leak over time. That causes an air leak into the case, detonating the motor.

I was trying to find the drain valve so that I could inspect it, but I did 'easily' see it. I was told it's under the exhaust manifold. Is it on the very bottom of the motor? If so, then the only way to get to it is to remove the motor?
It's a 1986 X2.

That's it, yes. I don't know if you need to remove the whole motor but it's possible.
