Good seal needed on Mag cover?

The previous owner of my 1986 650 X2 used RTV sealant to seal the magneto cover to the motor.

Is this acceptable? What would happen if this seal leaked?

I would personally use the corect gasket, but it may hold fine. If it leaks you could get water in your flywheel housing - it could short the stator and rust the gears.
