  • Rebuild help needed

I am in the process of rebuilding my '97 1100 stx engine (from reading the threads, and the fact that the #3 oil line was completely dry, I think it was starved of oil) and am not versed in the world of cylinder boring.
    1. What critical info do I need to know when I go to the shop?
    2. What needs to be installed on the block when I take it to get bored?
    3. Are there any options other than boring to consider?
I am also searching for new pistons and cannot make a decision on which brand, composition, etc. to go with. Any advice is greatly appreciated as this is my first try at rebuilding a jet ski engine. Also are their any upgrades I should think about while I have everything apart that will extend the life and fun (read performance) of my jet ski? Thanks in advance.

SBT sells piston kits with all your gaskets and bearings and pins . they hold up very well . also WSM pistons come as compleat kits and work very well . both are cost friendly . when it comes to a shop to hone or punch over a cyl you will need your pistons in hand and most after markets come with instrucktions . just remember its better to be a little on the loose side then to tight .

if your motor had a oil failure you should pull the cases apart and inspect the crank for damage before buying a topend . if the crank goes you wast the money you spent for the topend . and remember to get a good premix in the gas tank for the new topend .

you need to know what piston to cylinder clearance is for your model, take your cylinders to the machine shop and ask them how far they need to bore the cylinders to clear up the damage. they will begin to bore and usually stop once the damage is clear and then tell you how much they bored out. then will tell you what over size pistons to get. if they never went .50mm over then you can get a .50mm over kit, if they went past that but not over 1.0mm over then you need a 1.0mm kit. they will tell you.

if you know the damage is very minor then you could probrably just buy a .50mm over piston kit and take it to them and they will fit it in. but if the damage is more then you just bought a kit you cant use. being you dont know much about the boreing process or cylinder damage i would let the machinist tell you.

i would also do what is mentioned above and check the crank out for sure. like he said, if your crank is bad or on the verge, then the 3 cylinder piston kit you just bought along with the machine shop services and your own labor was a waste of money.
