piston installation

i have a 96 900 zxi that was just rebuilt by the previous owner. the engine is blown and when i took it apart i noticed that the arrows on the pistons were pointing to the intake side of the engine, my book says that the arrows should be pointing to the exhaust side of the engine. could anyone tell me what happens when they are installed backwards??????

You blow the engine. Rings snag, sometimes the skirts will crack.
