ZXI 900 power trim

Kaw. ZXI 900: I just got this machine, blown-up engine in a basket and hasn't been in the water for 2 years. I've got the engine redone ... thanks SBT. A question I have, should I be able to run the power trim while the machine is on the trailer? Does the engine need to be running? Does it need to be in the water?
If anyone can advise that would be great.
