whirring noise on 98 STX 1100

Hi folks, I have a 98 STX 1100 that while riding recently developed a whirring noise, the ski starts runs and performs really well. I took it out today and gave it a good run and towards the end of the run I feel the whirring noise was getting a little coarse.

Does this sound like the pump bearings and what is involved in inspecting them or replacing them?

Is changing the pump bearings a difficult job? and does anyone have or know where I can get a copy of the relevant section in the repair manual?

For those that are interested it was the pump bearings, both shagged.
