  • 1994 Kawasaki 750sx starting problems?

I have searched the web and this forum for my specific problem, however I couldn't really find anything which narrowed it down. And I know this post is long, however I could really use someones help.

I was on the lake yesterday and it was my first time out on my newly purchased 1994 750sx. It was running and starting/stoping fine, when all of a sudden I stopped to rest, and when I went to start it again it just 'clicked'. I got it home and started trouble shooting.

I pulled the starter out and 'jumped' the two positive leads on the CDI box and the starter turned over (i.e. spun freely in my hand). I also took it completely out and hooked it directly to a 12v battery and it worked. Since the starter worked (not under load, however) I then thought it was the relay so I pulled the relay out of the CDI box and touched the negative wire and the red/yellow wire to a battery to see if it would engage, and nothing happened (no 'clicking or anything). (I touched the red wire as well, however I know that just powers the box itself and not the relay).

I went to the Kawasaki dealer to order the relay, and he said before i do that to put it all back together and jump the two positive leads on the box to see if the starter would turn over under load, that it could be a bad starter. I put it all back together and I took a screwdriver and touched both leads and it DID crank for about 10 seconds (it did not start though). I immediately tried it again and NOTHING happened. No spark, no cranking, nothing. Oh and I tried to hit the start button and nothing happens how (no 'clicking' or turning over or anything). On a side note - I believe my ground/connection it good still too.

Now I think that I have a bad starter AND a bad relay. Could I have burned up the starter or relay during troubleshooting? Is this a common problem in these bikes? Dealer quoted me $360 for a starter and $62 for a relay. Does anyone know where to get some discounted parts? I've searched the web some and ebay, but is it smart to purchase used parts for this...I would hate for it to happen again.

Thank you in advance for any help!

UPDATE (7/8/07 @1:30) - I took the starter apart and found that where the positive lead comes in and connects to the brushes, the copper 'connector' in there has broke (looks like from fatuige). Is it worth getting repair parts for the starter ($25) or just purchasing a new starter (~$80)?
