  • S.L.O.W. & Warnings STX 1100 D.I.

Problem with low time 1100 STX D.I. Jet Ski

Indications: Mode shows ENG, Check Engine Symbol blinks, Blinking Red Light, and S.L.O.W engine. All begin Immediately after starting engine, hot or cold. Engine cranks easily and idles well. Engine balks with throttle advance above approx. 3,000 RPM.

Service Manual lists the following faults for the above symptoms.

    Code # Fault Check Results??

12 Throttle Pos Circuit Fault --- Ref. Volts low even disconnected
    from sensor (bad EMM?)

17 Throttle Pos Sensor High --- Ref. & Sig. Volts low, sensor seems functional (bad EMM?)

18 Alternator Volts High --- 12.3V @idle or OFF, Fuses good, ground good (bad EMM?)

25 EMM Sensor High --- Not expected with cold engine (bad EMM?)

41 Water Temp Circuit Fault --- Sensor Resistance check OK, Ref. Volts low (bad EMM?)

47 Air Temp Circuit Fault --- Sensor Resistance check OK, Ref. Volts low (bad EMM?)

    49 Air Temp Sensor High
--- Not expected with cold engine (bad EMM?)

The intake, nozzle, and all cooling lines have been checked and cleaned out. The air and water temp sensors have correct resistance values. The TPS voltages are low but track throttle movement.

I would like for someone experienced with D.I. skis tell me that this problem could be something other than the EMM and what else I can do to check this out. Its hard to believe the ski would crank and run so well at lower RPMs if there was much wrong with the EMM.

I also need to find a source for a 6-pin Deutsch connector to complete assembly of a diagnostic cable (or a source for the diagnostic cable) so I can get fault codes and also replace the EMM, if required.

Can anyone out there offer suggestions?

    FOLLOWUP:
I had no luck locating a suitable 6-pin Deutsch connector or a commercial diagnostic cable, so I gave up and made a connector to fit the one on the ski that I think will work. I am still waiting to receive a null modem cable with the required DB9 connector for the other end (I purchased this eBay) to complete assembly of the diagnostic cable required between the ski and the Laptop PC. I located and downloaded the diagnostic software and instruction manual from this site.
Another problem I encountered was locating an older laptop with Windows 95 or 98 installed so that the diagnostic software, which is written in DOS, could be run more easily. I was able to get the software to run on a Windows XP desktop but it works better for me with Win. 95 or 98. I hope to soon know if my quest to get my Jet Ski EMM to communicate with a Laptop PC works.
It would have been much easier to put my ski on the trailer and take it to a dealer for diagnosis, at least the first time I needed this done. We seem to have a very cooperative and friendly local dealer who would perform this service for a reasonable fee. If I am successful in getting this capability, however, it could save me time and money later. Besides, this activity keeps me entertained and off the streets. I'll post another update when I know more.

    Re: S.L.O.W. & Warnings STX 1100 D.I.

I am having the same issue as you are. I took my ski to the dealer after getting the check engine light and reduction in RPMs. They only charged me $40 to check it out. They felt sorry for me. They said the EMM was bad and had to be replaced. Total bill would be $1580 after tax and labor.

Needless to say, it is now in the garage at the lake sitting there. I have located a used EMM (which I have no idea if is good). They say it is and told me I could return it if it did not work. It only cost me $150 so I thought what the heck.

Once it comes in, I am going to replace it and take it on the lake. If it does not fix it, I am going to throw the jet ski into the lake and let it float away.

let me know if you have any more luck.
