  • Blown #3 Cylinder in 99 1100 ZXI

I blew the rear cylinder in my SBT motor. Unfortunately after the warranty was up. I think it was due to the oil injection, but I'm not sure. My plan is to rebuild the top end of this motor since it doesn't have too many hours on it. But I'm not sure exactly what is involved in doing that. I've pulled the motor and felt the incide through the port and the piston is trashed, but the cylinder wall doesn't feel too bad.
How do you go about determining the best course of action? Is it a simple hone and oversize, re-sleeve or a new reman cylinder case. I'll be purchasing the parts through SBT, but I need to figure out the best/easiest way of doing it. I put a lot of money into this ski and want to do it as economically as possible. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

If you contact our tech department and send us some photos of the inside of the damaged cyl and piston we will help you determine what the cause of failure was so you can try to prevent it from happening again. You would most likely have to do a complete top end kit, but you must make shure that there are no metal particles left in the bottom end around the crank area. If there is any possibility of left over debrie in the crank area the engine will fail with major damage occurring, there is always a chance when doing a top end only that there could be damage you cant see un less you dismantle the crank case halves and clean and inspect all parts. Good chance that the 1 failed cylinder was caused by a carburetor issue and not a oil pump issue. When oil pumps fail they destroy the whole engine.
