starter solenoid replacement

Any one ever replaced their starter solenoid with an automotive type? Just took our non functioning one out of a 93 SX750 and it looks similar to a small automotive type solenoid (with the brass adapters taken off). What about a remote solenoid location? Can this be moved out of the electrical box and placed near the firewall, like by the battery?? Thanks for responses.

yes it can be re-located, the stand-up riders use the sea-doo relay on many custom builds.
