  • Polaris 900 engine reliability

looking at getting two SL 900 and double trailer for $4k. Compression checked out fine on the engines with both having around 115 hours on them. are these reliable engines or are there common problems with them? any mods need to be made. I've read about the added fuel pump but forgot if this is the engine requiring that fix. thanks

    Re: Polaris 900 engine reliability

I have had no major problems with my 97 SL 900. The only problem thus far was at 140 hours, the head of one of the bolts that holds the cylinder head in place was sheared of from maybe being over torqued and clogged the water manifold. Once that was replaced along with the o-rings and gaskets, it runs like a champ again. Now has 144.6 hours and still runs like a champ. Dream-o-meter tops out at 63, so I would guess top speed is in the mid 50's. As far as I am aware, there are no mojor problems with this motor, most of the problems relate to the 750 I believe.

The 750 (tripple cylinder engines - made by Fuji) DID need the upgraded fuel pump and the 900 (as well as, the 700 twin, 1050 and 1200 3 cylinder domestic motors) does not. The engine itself is VERY solid. The only thing you might see is the ignition go out. The CDI / stators can be a bit weird. They are very good running machines.... very fast and accelerate hard. Probably the fastes 900 out there.
