  • 700's what's the deal

I just bought a 1996 Hurricane for $300. It's a winter project / bucket of bolts right now. It's missing a cylinder head.

what is the deal with 700 cylinder heads?
I just got off the partsland website.

    1996 Hurricane part no. 3022034 $21.99
    1997 Hurricane part no. 3022050 $22.99
    1996 SL700 part no. 3022025 $39.99
    1997 SL700 has part no. 3022025 $39.99 & part no. 3022050 $22.99

The motor has a remanufactured sticker on it and it's not an SBT. The crank Bearings are shot.
If I have to buy new heads what do the Hurricane experts like Wolf recommend?

    Re: 700's what's the deal

I just took the head cover off the one head that I do have and wouldn't you know I can't find a part no. on it.

Should I buy two new heads or take my chances mixing and matching? Who knows I could get lucky and buy the matching head.

What do the guys that build these for a living know about these 700's?

      Re: 700's what's the deal

I guess nobody knows anything about the 700's. Here is what I found if anyone is interested.

All 700's CRANKCASE ASM part No. 2201210
      96 & 97 Hurricanes CYLINDER part No. 3021018
      96 & 97 SL700 CYLINDER part No. 3021019

      1996 SL,SLT cylinder head volume uninstalled 44.6cc installed 37.2cc
1996 Hurricane cylinder head volume uninstalled 40.7cc installed 33.0cc

      1996 SL,SLT rpm operating 6300, limiter 6700
      1996 Hurricane rpm operating 6700, limiter 7200

Looks like the Hurricane in 1996 had higher compression, Different porting both years, and a Higher rev limiter than regular 700's

        Re: 700's what's the deal

Got some expert advice from Wolf if anyone else has a Hurricane.

John, the cylinder head that I am running is made by a company called Hymark. it was designed for the Polaris 700 RMK. I like it because of these a single piece head shell that ties the two cylinders together and reduces flexing of the crank case. The domes are replaceable , I had domes specifically made with no squish band. this allowed me to machine the squish band to whatever I desired. I have a couple different sets of domes. I also use plastic base gaskets that come in different thicknesses. So that I can alter Port Heights.as far as the pump goes , your best bet is to get a standard Polaris six vain stainless pump. I believe they cost around $200.bore the stock exit nozzle out to 87 mm and add an Adjust-A-Thrust. this gives you lots of low end in midrange power , and quite respectable top speed. As far as sponsons go. I am using beach house sponsons designed for a seadoo H. X.. They really provide a lot of grip in the corners. The stock pipe can be modified. It involves cutting 2 in. out of the middle of the pipe. I have attached three pictures to this e-mail to show you what I did to the pipe in the water routing. You will also need to install a small water fitting at the end of the pipe.I also have Mikuni 44 mm carbs on there which made quite a difference, the cylinders and cases have also been ported.
