  • Bearing Housing

Is this driveshaft bearing housing a goner? Note that the rear seal is degraded (impeller side). However, the forward seal is in fine shape as well as the "bearing" (bushing) surfaces. Should I replace this thing (retail $95) or just keep it well greased? It's from a '95 SLT750 that will be used for mild recreational purposes.

AND..... could this seal damage have been caused by the dreaded "Engine Misalignment Syndrome"?

    Re: Bearing Housing

I'm going through the same thing with my 95 sl right now. I checked out the coupler, and found the rear seal was bad. Looks like the previous owner didn't grease it much. Everything else looks good though. I found on a 96 900 they offer the seal seperately.http://www.partsland.com/index.cgi?N...0-DRIVE-SYSTEM #10 $11.99

      Re: Bearing Housing

take the coupler to your local bearing/seal house and get 2 replacement seals. Its a common seal, they should be less than 6 bux a piece. replace both seals and flip the carrier around and run it some more, just grease it every 15 hours with lotsa grease and you will get a lot more life out of it.

        Re: Bearing Housing

That's actually what i did too. I just posted the polaris seals cause i figured it would be easier for him. The seals are 1 1/2" O.D. 7/8"I.D. 5/16" thick. They were 3.99 each at the local bearing house. Just a fyi.

          Great advice, Guys!!

So off I went to a local bearing/seal distributor...

The bearing/seal "expert" examined the Polaris bearing housing and spec'd out a CR (Chicago Rawhide) #8702 as a suitable replacement. The only drawback to this model seal is that it is carbon steel and can rust. It costs about $6.50 each.

He did say that a higher quality replacement would be a CR (Chicago Rawhide) #8698 which is, rubber coated, with a Stainless Steel case and spring. Dimensions 7/8" x 1.503" OD x .313" Wide. These retailed for around $28 each but had to be special ordered.

Thought I would pass on that info to the Polaris techies.

            Re: Bearing Housing

I have included a picture of the bearing housing with its new seal replacement. Looks pretty good to me.

Note, also that I have swapped out that funky Polaris grease fitting for a more common grease fitting.
