I had a connecting rod go on my 1997 SL 700 polaris ski . The rod is damaged, the top of the piston is damaged and the cylinder top cover plate is damaged. My plan of attack is to just replace the bearings and the connecting rod also clean the cylinders and order two new pistons. Is that a wise way to go about it , if not what would you suggest?

I'd be looking at what caused the rod to go. And I think you'll find the crank is more than the ordinary person is able to rebuild. Might want to tear it down and see if its rebuildable easy (with a rebuilt crank) otherwise check out the rebuilt short-block prices here on SBT.
