SLX 780 broke a rod

I am working on a 1995 SLX 780 that I owned last year and sold to a friend. It never gave me a bit of trouble but now it has broke a rod. I have no clue as to why. It looks as though the last piston (PTO side) started to detonate away (almost got to the ring on one side) and the center cylinder is the one that broke the rod. I have no clue as to why this happened and wanted some input. The ski was running great when I sold it and on my friends first trip out he said it was running strong, lost power all the sudden then locked up. It had oil in it, and it doesn't look like a heat or an oil problem from looking at the sides of the pistons. I know these boats have crank problems, but what are they? Any input would be appreciated.

Do you want to sell the cylinders and heads? I got taken by a company that was supposed to refurb mine and I have not received them back since last August.
