  • polaris virage I puel pump pressure ?

    Gentlemen
a newbie with a tech question.
I have a 2002 virage 800 I ( its injected ) the other day cruising after 15 minutes the engine died like it was running low on fuel ....
took it home the next day It did the same thing 15 minUtes then died
the fuel lines have a fuel tap. I assume to check pressure? well the pressure was none so I pulled the pump unit and I would like to bench test the pump with a gauge attached to verify the pressure
I'm assuming like a car the injected fuel pressure should be much greater then 5-7 lbs ? I have not tested it yet.
anyhow I have the pump out (also great time to clean the tank )
and the number on the pump is 0102A 253 made by CARTER
I have done a through search and cant find any specs as for pressure or the pump listed anywhere.

Check your battery and charging system for proper voltage. A low battery or charging problems can cause the injectors and electrical system to not work properly. You can check the system by placing a volt meter on the battery while the ski is not running. You should have at least 12v (12.5 or so). When the engine is turning over, you should only loose a volt or so. When the engine is running, run it up to about 3000 to 4000 rpm and check voltage. It should be more than you started with when the engine was off.

I have also seen problems with the Fuel Injectors going bad, but usually the engine will run rough even out of the water as soon as it is started.

I'm not sure about fuel pressure specs on that ski so can't help much there. In general though, an electric fuel pump will either work fine or not at all.

Let us know what you find.

      Thaks Wheels&Waves
we checked the electrical and also put in a new battery all checked ok
the reason we figured bad pump is the pressure tap tee located on the supply side (schrader valve) only dribbled fuel out when pushing the stem in. I think it should of had some pressure behind it for the injectors?
      thx again DON

In the very bottom of the pump there is a screen, much like the one in a faucet for a sink. I,ve seen the paper filters on the bottom of the sending unit start to come apart over time and they will begin to clog the screen restricting fuel supply. Check it , clean it and if possible try to get your hands on a newer polaris carbutated or injected sending unit. The newer models have a plastic mesh screen instead of paper. This was a proven repair on a 2001 virage txi. Customer says it never ran better!

p.s. pressure will be pretty high, like a car-tell me the year and might have a spec for ya
