• Polaris Display (MFD)

After installing the battery back in my 1996 SL 900 the dsplay powered up, but is reading kind
of funny. The MPH, fuel level, and oil level are not registering at all. And on the right side of
the display the hours indicator, rpm, distance, volts, etc, headings are being displayed. Also,
neither of the 2 buttons are working or change anything. I suspected a low batter so I
connected an external volt meter to the batter and it is only reading 11.77 volts. However, it
is still enough to make it turn over and fire up. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it
and it did not fix the problem. Any ideas? Battery voltage too low to make it work right?
By the way, it was working perfectly before and has never given me any problems.

That battery is bad - replace it.

My 96 has done some similar things, even with a good battery. I disconnected the plug at the back of the mfd and reconnected, and it came back to life.

The MFD needs to be reset after the battery has been out for long periods of time. Unplug for 2 minutes and plug back in. They usually will reset and work just fine, but sometimes they do die even from unplugging the back. Do not short it out when plugging back in.

That battery is still toast - it should read 12.5+ volts.

I agree that the battery is definitely needing replacement. In terms of 'resetting' the dispaly,
where is the connector or plug for it? Is it one of the many wires going into the box on top of the battey?

Unscrew the soft handlebar cover, and you'll see the plug int he bottom of the display.

One more dumb question. Is that Display just a readout, or is that actually the brains? Meaning, if I had to replace the display, would the new display show the same amount of total hours, or would it go back to 0?

I believe it tracks the hours internally so if you replace it it's back to zero. That's how Yamaha's are, and I believe Polaris too.

I know if you get a new MFD you get 0 hours. On my SLX not all the bars lit so I got a new one under warranty and the dealer let me imstall it myself. Make sure yu do not kink the clear hose on the back when putting it back in---that is for the speedo. When I removed my original one the speedo did not work and found that tube was kinked because Polaris made it too long. I cut off the end and it worked fine.

Sinister,
How does that speedometer pressure/tubing setup thing work....
mine doesn't work as good as it used to......
can I just replce the clear tubing ??
Does it work on some kind of water pressure??
Weidest thing I have ever seen........

It works off vaccuum. The end sticks out into the intake area parallel with the driveshaft in front of the impeller. A sensor int he MFD converts vaccuum to speed readings. It's actually very accurate compared to paddle wheels. Most Polaris and Tigersharks used that type of speedo/sender.

Yep what Bryan said. If it is slowly getting worse you might be building up algae, salt, dirt or whatever at the pickup or the line. Get under the craft and behind the intake grate is a fin that sticks down. Make sure the hole at the very end of the fin is completely open.
Maybe the clear hose has a hole worn in it somewhere?

I was under the impression there was a small bag/balloon in the MFD that inflates/deflates with speed. Is this correct? Maybe you have a problem there?

the LCD is out. It happen on both of my polaris. My MODE button didnt work. To take it off all you do is shove a flat tip screwdriver on the sides of the insert of the soft part around the LCD or MFD or whatever u wanna call it and swivel it out. then unplug the back. Just remember it cost about 230.00 (if I remember right) oh and your hrs on you ski will reset to . Is that good or bad thing?? lol

:D

--oh if the skis not turning over... change the battery to.. then wehn the ski starts see if the MFD comes on.. if not.... follow above instructions. good luck

my speedo works, it just takes it a bit to come on and doesn't show anything until I get to 4MPH or more, I think I'll replace the tubing to see if that fixes it, along with washing off the area behind the Grate....
Thanks guys ! :D
