Your boat has a rev limiter saftey device which when activated will limit
RPM. ON the 96 SL900 and SLTX, the ignition timing retards to 8* BTDC when a
low fuel or overheat condition exists. The watercraft will exhibit symptoms
such as reduced performance during acceleration, and also reduced top speed
Is that what is happening? Is your MFD display flashing at all when you
first start the engine? Let me know what is happening here , but if this is
what is going on, then its a fairly easy fix to troubleshoot. If the CDI is
bad there is no way to check it without the tester at a dealership. The
following is a way to check the stator:
Connect Ohmeter leads to
Alternator coil = Red/purplewire to yellow =.6 ohms
Trigger coil = white/yellow to black = 220 ohms
pulser coil = Blue/red to red/white = 90 ohms
exciter coil =red/white to green/red = 490 ohms
All of these wires are in the black electrical box.
Also the following is a way to bypass the rev limiter for testing only!!!!!
Open the black electrcial box and find theCDI Module gray wire and
disconnect it from the circuit board. Start engine and see if it revs
correctly. You can tape the wire up and close the box and put the boat in
the water and run if you want to, but be careful to not jump the boat, and
let the engine free rev, and then come back in the water. Crank damage can
result very easy from this. If the boat runs great with the gray wire
disconnected then we can easily diagnose it from there. GOOD LUCK :D
