  • sl750 PTO rod failures?

Ijust picked up a 95 SL 750 that pitched the PTO rod through the block. I found another motor from a 94 SL 750 with good crank case halves, but it will need a crank, (had water in it from sitting outside). Anyway I noticed that this engine has also had a PTO rod failure at one time. When I rebuild the engine, are there some updates or improvements that should be done to prevent future engine failures?
Do the top end kits come with pistons, rings, wrist pin bearings and gaskets from the crank case up?

There are no updates to the build of that block.

Yes that's a top-end kit, althought the wrist-pin bearings are on request, they already come with a crank, so you may not need them in the top-end.

Since the rod came out of the boat you are reparing you want to try to find out why before you put a rebuilt motor in it and have the same thing happen. Rebuild the carbs, drain and check fuel and oil systems for leaks or blockage and water. Watch the oil system and check the plugs during break-in. Also add a new fuel 3 outlet fuel pump kit. I thing the stock pumps had problems with fuel flow.

Thanks for the replies guys! Where can I get the three outlet pump? Do you still use the stock pump with the new one, and use two pumps, or just replace it with the three outlet one? The PTO piston shows signs of being to lean. I've worked on lots of snowmobile engines, when they are to lean it will take out the piston and sometimes the cylinder, but the bottom end will usaully be ok. I wonder if the previous owner stayed in the throttle, even when it was losing power from the piston failure, and thats what finished off the bottom end?

Almost every tpo rod failure that I have seen on the 650/750 fuji motors has been due to water ingestion. Thats the cyl that gets the water 1st when it gets into the airbox. t is usually a lite hydrolock that just dents the bearing rollers. Several hours later, then the rod lets go.
