I have two codes set that are from a failure previous to the engine rebuild I recently performed. Is there a way I can clear these codes with out any specialized equipment? Engine overheat and low oil codes are set. I also have the digital gauge that is giving false information such as Idle rpm is 6500 rpm, the digital speedo does not work but the analog gauge works. Where do I start to diagnose this problem. My manual has little if any info on this subject.

Re: 96 GTX codes & Gauge malfunction
I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say you have 2 codes set.
The MPEM can reveal some diagnostic codes in the form of a series of beeps through the beeper for troubleshooting purposes, It is activated by pressing the start button 5 times ( without a lanyard attached). When you hear one short beep and one long beep it has activated the diagonostic mode. Once the diagonostic mode is activated, you place the lanyard on the post and press the start button again. It will give you a code such as,
one long beep and one short beep. This means no safety lanyard has ever been programmed in the MPEM. Two short beeps means the MPEM cannot read the safety lanyard or the lanyard is defective. 2 long beeps means wrong lanyard or bad connection between the lanyard and the MPEM. Three short beeps means the wiring harness of DESS switch is grounded or there is a short circuit.
I am not aware of any "codes" that you can change. Once you repair a problem that is recorded in the MPEM, the code that you hear, the beep codes, are automatically changed, or just deleted as a problem is fixed.
Beyond this, the only way you can change any thing in an MPEM is with a dealers' programmer.
To be qutie honset, I have no idea what "codes" you are talking about.Bill O'Neal <br>

Re: 96 GTX codes & Gauge malfunction
I guess I misinterpreted the read out. When I plug the key in, the digital display flashes High Temp & Low Oil. When I start the engine these two continue to flash on the digital read out. I know the engine is not overheating and I have bypassed the oil level sending unit. There are two warninng lamps, one for low oil in the tachometer and and one for high temp in the speedometer. Neither one of these lights come on. All of the info that is available from the digital readout is false. Such as RPM is way high, Speedo not working etc...

Re: 96 GTX codes & Gauge malfunction
Fuel gauge reads full at all times even with sending unit disconnected, mph function does not work, Rpms register about 5,000 rpm higher than actual rpm and peg @ 8000 rpm, engine temp 130F flashes continuously, beeper no longer works. Engine starts and runs fine. Just a digital gauge malfunction. Is this a bad MPEM?

Re: 96 GTX codes & Gauge malfunction
Bill,
His gauge is doing the same thing that a unit in my shop is currently doing except mine is a 1998 GTX-L. It is not a code but a text warning in the LCD display of Hi-Temp following by Low Oil. It does not activate the low oil light.
Other errors being generated is Lake temp at 130, Ext. temp at 130, no fuel level indication, hours is ------. All of these errors are being generated with the engine off in addition to the engine running so it has nothing to do with the spark plugs. See my other post for more information as to what I have troubleshot. Still looking for a resolution.

Re: 96 GTX codes & Gauge malfunction
Anyone with a solution to this guage malfunction problem???
I am having the exact error readings with a 98' gtx limited. All errors are exactly like with previous posts. Low oil and Hi-temp readings when these two things would not likely be occuring.

Any Ideas or suggestions on this issue??
I read something to do with disconnecting compass? and all guages then read correctly?
Any ideas will help
Thanks
