97 xp headache

I have a 97 xp and it only starts when it wants to. I was riding tonight and going well and it stalls it did the same thing this weekend and tehe weekend before. you take out of the water and let it sit it starts fine. when I try to start it almost sounds like a dead battrey. Driving me crazy had to swim in today from 200yards off shore and it was not fun? I recently changed the drive shaft and ski was working great with no problems for 2 months now its driving me crazy. It als shuts off at high speed feels like it boggs and then dies. Any help would be great

Do the simply stuff. Check the plugs, the battery, etc. Test the charging system if you can, and check the carb filters. There are several in there.

Have you done all of that (any of that)?

When you have problems starting it, does it turn over at all or do you get a hissing sound?

It could be the starter hanging up in the flywheel(overheating), and when it cools it releases itself, have that checked to.

When i try to start it it sounds like the batterey is dead or dying I then take the plugs out and clean up it starts again. Also the oil light has been coming on and I have oil in the tank but it stays on???

What do your plugs look like....are they wet and black, or dry and a choclate brown? Sounds like it could be a carb issue.

On another note, carbs would not cause the issue of it sounding like it's dying, thats somewhere between the battery and the computer(MPEM)...battery, starter, stator, ignition coil, starter relay, MPEM, or even as simple as a bad ground or connection.

But if you can clean the plugs and it will start, yank the carbs and rebuild them.

the plugs are wet what is involved in rebuilding a carb or does it just need to be cleaned. The plugs are fouled in the xp thats why I dont get it to start, I changed the plugs and it starts right up with no problems

Carbs are easy to rebuild. What are the highs and lows set at?

Highs shloud be at 0 turns out, lows 1 1/4 turns out.
